Using mobile data in Jersey: a small island, well wired
Jersey may be tiny, but its mobile network is excellent. Three operators — Sure, Airtel-Vodafone and JT — cover the island with strong 4G and a growing 5G footprint, so in St Helier and right across the parishes you'll get fast, stable data for maps, contactless payments and video calls. The thing genuinely worth knowing before you go: Jersey is a self-governing Crown Dependency, not part of the United Kingdom or the European Union for telecoms purposes. That matters because UK and EU "roam-like-at-home" arrangements usually do not apply here — a phone left roaming on its normal home tariff can rack up surprisingly steep charges, and plenty of British visitors have been caught out assuming Jersey "counts as the UK". A travel eSIM with a plan that explicitly lists Jersey sidesteps that completely: you pay a flat local price instead of discovering an off-zone rate on next month's statement.
Coverage across Jersey
The island is only about nine miles by five, so coverage is comprehensive almost everywhere you'll actually go: St Helier and its harbour, the St Brelade and St Aubin's Bay hotels in the southwest, Gorey and the Mont Orgueil castle area in the east, and the quieter rural northern parishes. The dramatic north-coast cliff paths and a few of the deeper, sheltered valleys can see signal dip briefly, and the offshore reefs and the boat trips out to the wild Écréhous or Minquiers reefs will naturally lose reception — but for ordinary travel around the island you'll rarely be without data. The sensible habit is to cache an offline map before a long cliff-path walk, both for the odd signal gap and because the coastal paths can be exposed when the weather turns.
How much data you'll need
Jersey travel is light on data. You'll mainly use Google Maps for the narrow, often unsigned country lanes — and they need care, since Jersey drives on the left and uses an unusual "filter in turn" rule at unmarked junctions that surprises first-time visitors. You'll also lean on WhatsApp to reach guesthouse hosts and book restaurant tables, and — genuinely useful here — a tide-times app, because Jersey has one of the largest tidal ranges in the world and the beach you walked across at low tide can be deep water hours later. Add the usual social and a bit of browsing and a weekend is comfortable on around 2-4 GB. A week of exploring beaches, the wartime tunnels, the castles and the coastal walks runs roughly 5-10 GB. Heavy streamers or anyone working remotely should size up; the plans above show what's available, and topping up is straightforward if you misjudge it.
Keep your number and WhatsApp
No need to abandon your usual number. A dual-SIM phone runs the eSIM alongside your home SIM: the eSIM carries data while your normal line keeps calls, SMS and bank one-time codes, and WhatsApp stays on your existing number. Before you fly
