For the way most people travel — Grab rides, Google Maps through Bangkok's tangle of streets, Line and WhatsApp messaging, Google Translate's camera over a menu, posting to Instagram from the beach — you'll have quick, reliable data in every city, resort town and on most islands. Coverage across Thailand
Coverage is genuinely excellent across the populated parts of the country. Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Ayutthaya, Pattaya, Hua Hin and the Gulf and Andaman coasts are all well served, and the major islands — Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Phi Phi and Krabi's beaches — have solid signal in the resort and town areas. The Bangkok BTS Skytrain and MRT metro keep data flowing underground and between stations, which matters when you're navigating the city. Where it weakens: the remote jungle and mountain areas of the far north around Mae Hong Son and Pai, the deep national parks like Khao Sok and Khao Yai, the more isolated stretches of Isan in the northeast, and on the boat and ferry crossings between islands where you'll lose signal mid-sea. On the smallest, least-developed islands — think the quieter parts of the Trang or Satun archipelagos — data can slow noticeably. For anything off the beaten track, download offline maps first and don't assume a live connection on the water.
How much data you'll need
Thailand is a moderate-to-heavy data destination, mostly because of how much people share while they're there. The everyday apps are Grab (rides, food delivery and even some boat and tour bookings), Google Maps, Line (the dominant chat app locally — many hotels and tour operators prefer it) alongside WhatsApp, Google Translate's camera mode for menus and street signs, and a steady stream of photos and reels. As a rough guide: a long weekend in Bangkok runs about 3–5 GB; one to two weeks split between Bangkok, the north and the islands lands around 10–20 GB; and if you're streaming or uploading video daily, an unlimited-style plan from the options above is the sensible choice. Heavy social posters and anyone working remotely from a beach café should err on the generous side rather than topping up mid-trip. Island-hoppers who spend a lot of time on the smaller Andaman islands will also want a buffer, since they'll often be relying on mobile data rather than reliable resort Wi-Fi.
Keep your number and WhatsApp
