Using mobile data in Guyana: what to expect
Guyana's two main operators — Digicel and GTT, which now trades as One Communications — provide 4G/LTE across the populated coastal strip, where the great majority of the country actually lives. Around Georgetown, along the East Coast and East Bank Demerara corridors, and in the larger coastal towns, you'll have workable data for maps, messaging, banking and uploading photos. A travel eSIM is the practical choice here: it activates on arrival at a flat plan price, avoids roaming charges, and saves you sorting out a local SIM on the ground. Be realistic about speeds, though — Guyana is a developing telecoms market, and data can be slower and less consistent than what you're used to in North America or Europe, even where the signal bars look healthy.
Coverage across Guyana
Coverage is overwhelmingly a coastal story, and it's worth being honest about that before you go. The Demerara-Mahaica region around Georgetown has the best and most reliable signal, and the populated coast running east toward New Amsterdam in Berbice and west across the Essequibo river mouth is broadly covered. The river town of Bartica, a gateway to the interior mining and forest regions, has service in town. Beyond that, the picture changes sharply: the vast forested interior — the Rupununi savannah, Lethem on the Brazilian border, the Kaieteur Falls region and the deep Amazon hinterland — has very limited to no mobile coverage at all. If you're flying inland or doing any interior travel, plan to be offline for long stretches and arrange your communications accordingly. How much data you'll need
On the coast, travel here is data-light. You'll use Google Maps where it has detail, WhatsApp (the dominant messaging app right across Guyana, for both locals and visitors), Facebook and Messenger, plus email and the occasional video call home. There's no real ride-hailing app ecosystem, so you'll arrange taxis directly. A rough guide: a few days around Georgetown and the coast is comfortable on around 3-5 GB; a week of coastal travel with day trips lands around 8-12 GB; if you'll be online a lot or working remotely, lean toward a larger or unlimited-style allowance. Keep your number and WhatsApp
Keep your home number while you travel. A modern dual-SIM phone runs the eSIM alongside your usual SIM: the eSIM carries data while your normal number keeps calls, SMS and bank one-time codes, and WhatsApp — which everyone here uses — stays on your existing number with nothing to re-verify. Just turn your home SIM's data roaming off so it can't quietly run up charges while the eSIM handles your data. Before you fly
